Foundation of Nursing and Health Promotion

Welcome!
My name is Ashley and I will be your instructor over the next 15 weeks.  Throughout the semester we will be exploring the nursing process, theory and history.  I look forward to working with you throughout the semester. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Description
Nursing 301 is a three credit hour course that will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 45 minutes.  Nursing 302 is a one credit hour co-requisite that will meet either Tuesday or Thursday for 1 hour for lab studies on assessment and evaluation.

Course Objectives
Nursing 301 is an introductory to the profession of nursing.  By the end of the semester student will verbalize the understanding of the foundation of nursing and skills required for the nursing profession.  Students will also have an understanding of the nursing process and history of the nursing profession.  Students will gain the knowledge of nursing theories that became the foundation of the nursing profession. Students will be introduced to nursing assessment, health promotion, and disease prevention.

Assignment
The assessment process is a very important part of the nursing process.  According to  Broom (2007) "Assessment is a fundamental nursing skill that underpins decisions about interventions and priorities in care delivery," (p. 22).  Please read and review the article Exploring the assessment process by Mark Broom.  During this week we will look and examine the assessment process in relation to the nursing process.  Assessment skills help aid in determining a care plan for the patient as well as the family involved.  The assessment process plays a major role in the development of the nursing process.  Students must become familiar with their assessment skills to develop their skills in the nursing process.  Please post your comments and concerns that need to be evaluated.
